NC Academy

Academic classes on Fridays for homeschooled teens, in person at our Germantown location.​

Enrolling new teens for 2026-27

​​2026-27 NC Academy Schedule (Fridays)

10:00 AM-12:00 PM: The Art of Biology + Lab with local science educator (1 science credit)

12:00 - 1:00 PM: Lunch/Break

1:00 - 3:00 PM: English Language and Composition with local teaching artists (1 English credit)

Successful completion of the course will result in 2 credits aligned with PA homeschool standards with the option for honors distinction.​​​​

Who is NC Academy for? 

  • Homeschooled/cyberschooled young people looking for in-person classes 

  • 13-18 years old

  • Ready for high school-level academic content with peers (including homework) 

  • Must enroll for whole year (~33 Fridays, September-May)

2026-27 Cost

  • 1 class: $2000/yr

  • 2 classes: $4000/yr

  • Sliding scale available

  • Payment due upfront or monthly

NC Academy takes place at Natural Creativity, 5534 Pulaski Ave Suite 202, Phila, PA 19144 (ADA-accessible space)

Math Tutoring on Fridays w/ Shane Riggins

1-on-1 math tutoring (any level) is available with NC math specialist, Shane Riggins. Bring your textbook questions, online learning confusion, and Rubik's cubes. $25/hr. This can take place during either class, if you are not signed up for it. 

Shane loves talking math with math skeptics, math enthusiasts, and everyone in between.

The Origin of NC Academy

2015: Natural Creativity incorporates as a 501(c)3 nonprofit with the goal of making self-directed education/alternative homeschooling/unschooling accessible for Philadelphia families of all incomes.

2026: Based on the input of teens, their parents, and recent alum, it becomes apparent that our homeschooled high schoolers want to have more options for formalized instruction that connects their interests to credit-worthy classes. We created NC Academy with the goal of hosting two yearlong academic classes at NC on Fridays, starting in September 2026. The experiment begins…

Hiring: English Teachers* for 2026-27

* Teaching certification is not necessary; interest in working with awesome 13-18 year old homeschoolers is required!

Class size: 7-10 students

Units = 6-33 weeks long (minimum 6 weeks) 

Teachers will provide meaningful feedback and grades according to our organizational approach to evaluations.

You are invited to teach English skills through themes!  

​

Dystopian novels? Poetry or resistance? Queer memoirs? Yes please! 

Teachers can teach multiple units in the year, covering different topics. 

 

Other sample topics:

  • Poetry

  • Storytelling and performance

  • Public speaking

  • Cultural critique

  • Grammar and vocabulary

  • Essay writing

  • Creative writing

  • Journalism

  • Research papers

  • Basic linguistics

Pay

  • Payment for teachers is $40/hour (2 hours of teaching + 1 hour of prep each week = $120/wk max)

  • We hire for a minimum of 6 weeks, with preference for longer units (less administrative/onboarding overhead on our part).

  • Teachers are hourly contract 1099 employees and will receive no additional benefits (healthcare, sick pay, etc).

  • Payment is administered on a biweekly basis.If a teacher misses a week of teaching but prepares substitute materials/lesson plans, they are paid for prep but not class time.

Dates

  • April - rolling: Teacher search and hiring, contracts signed

  • April - August: Youth enrollment

  • August (NC staff training/prep month): Curriculum plans reviewed, payroll completed, clearances submitted

    • Onboarding admin can happen as soon as teachers are hired.

  • Friday, Sept 18, 2026: NC Academy Begins

  • A complete calendar/schedule will be given out in early September, aligning with NC’s holidays/breaks.

We are accepting applications for English teachers on a rolling basis.

Send your application to ncacademy@naturalcreativity.org and include: 

​

  • Teaching experience, if any (not required!) - including any out-of-school or alternative ed experience

  • General idea of content/material you want to present (full curriculum not needed)

  • General availability/timing ("8 weeks in winter" or "spring term")

​

All teachers will be required to submit PA Child Abuse clearance and additional background checks at least 2 weeks before teaching begins.

​

After receiving your interest, we will reach out for an interview to talk more about y/our pedagogical approach.
